Ranch hopping

Today we are going to a ranch to look for a stud prospect... I'm in love with this horse from what I've read about him...
I'm so excited we are going to look at this ranch today.. They have about 30+ horses to pick from.:. But I know of they don't get right with prices and personalities we are headed elsewhere.. Haha
I had a dream about this horse.. Never a good sign.. Lol

Finished a scarf I've been making... Maya is so fabulously modeling it :)

Well it's official we are headed tot he stock show.  I put this sticker in the window of the truck Saturday :)   I wound up preparing way to much food for my cowboy and his friend. When I say too much, I made them a ranch cream cheese dip, French onion dip and spinach dip.  And put an array of crackers, chips and pretzels along with celery and carrots for dipping.
I also made them as my cowboy calls them "gourmet sandwiches"..  Meaning, turkey, Swiss, apples and Russian dressing, and ham, avocado bacon and cheddar...
They left out early Sunday morning.. And m y plane leaves tomorrow about 12:51..

Chicken pot pie
This right here is a chicken pot pie I made Friday night.  Now Friday I had my corvette all detailed and waxed by a fella down the street... Now when I went to go get the car... We got us a big ole ice storm.. It was awesome.. My newly waxed and pampered car was covered In ice and freezing ran...  I was pretty disappointed because it sure did look pretty for all of 5 minutes... Now that wouldn't have happened if I didn't get the car detailed... Same goes for rain... But, what I was getting at, was that it was freezing.. Went from 60 to 22 in a day...  So I decided to make some comfort food..  We threw down on this pot pie Friday night, then my brother and father joined us for supper Saturday night, and we had enough for all of us..
My brother said this was the best pot pie he ever had... Better than Marie calendars hahahah.

Bad Mama Chickens

Well, after a lot of advice from some Farmgirl friends, I wound up putting up a heat lamp and getting the babies all settled in the coop.... and at work yesterday I decided that I wanted to put them in their own brooding box... sooooooooo, after I went and got that all made up and all.... I went to get the chicks.. and they are dead....  so I scolded the Mama chickens and told them they were horrible..
I have some more babies, ready to get hatched in a few weeks.. so I will remove them immediately from the Mama's and take care of them myself...  I was really sad that, that happened.. But, I'm ready and learned my lesson..
On another note.. the power company finally came in and put up our lights in the arena.. too bad it was 30 degrees with wind last night.. I can ride in the cold... I just can't ride with the wind...
Kismet is doing great.. her wound looks good, just she doesn't have hair down the inside of her left leg that was oozing.. but, she's walking great and looks like she feels good...  as long as the weather is nice, I'm going to ride her this weekend, and try to start getting her ready for a jumping show in NC on February 16th.

Chickens are like potato chips.. you can't have just one

We started doing some cleaning up around the ranch.. and I've also slowly been remodeling our utility room, more like turning it into my crafting/sewing room :)
We got the milking bar back up and running, we had the harley in there and a bunch of stuff that just got shoved in the old barn.. so, we rummaged through that and threw out some junk and the such..
Cleaned up the bar top and fabuloso-ed the floors..  It smells and looks real nice in there now....

On another note, Friday after I closed up the clinic I went home and decided I was going to try making candles... So I laid everything out and got started on this project...
Getting Ready

First thing, I went to Fred's and got a cheap ole mixing bowl and a cheap pot.  I wasn't sure what sort of mess I was about to make..  So I put the wax  on the stove using the double boiler method... as shown above..

waited for it to start melting, and I wasn't sure exactly what it would look like or start to do...

Once it was all melted, I had to wait until the wax cooled down to 130 degrees... it was up at 150+ after it was all melted completely.

Then I carefully, well tried to be as careful as I could.. poor the wax into the 6 mason jars that I had fixed wicks into....
ask me how that went.... not so good... I pour wax all over the countertop, floor and myself... it was awesome.. hahaha..  but, I did decide that next time I would do this outside..  I put some unmelted wax pieces and some glitter for decoration... I think it looks nice... smells good to, it smells like Honey Almond :)

After that, I brought one of the freezers from the bar into the house, put all the deer meat in that freezer and left the other freezer full of beef.. that made everything a little more manageable..
I also, brought in this double burner counter top thingy from a restaurant and put it on top of the stainless steel freezer that I brought in.. that will now be the new candle making station.. haha.

Random Picture of me when I was a wee lil girl.

Saturday Morning I woke up to frost everywhere.. I though we had brought back the nice Florida weather with us, but we didn't.. which is ok, we need some cold days to kill the bugs and junk that didn't die last year.  Winter last year was very very mild.

After some of the frost melted and the sun came out I went to go check on the chickens.. and I heard a little peep peep peep noise coming out of a nesting box...  I peeked in there and found a baby chicken..
and now there are 4 I have a little yellow one, a black one, and then 2 that are yellow and black... So I'm figuring I have one White Silkie, one Black and 2 partridge.. :)
First baby chick

Sunday, we went to see Don Williams down at the opera house.. boy that was good.. He's getting up there in age, but you can't tell it in his voice..

All in all we had a great weekend at home.. got a lot of stuff accomplished that we needed to do and have been putting off... that is about all that's going on around here..

1 jar roasted red peppers drained

1 can chipotle peppers in adobo sauce

1/2 cup cilantro, fresh, chopped

2 Tbsp fresh lime juice

3/4 tsp table salt

Place green beans, garlic, zucchini, tomatoes, onion, green pepper, chiles, Spinach, jalapeno, poblano, oregano, cumin and broth into a large soup pot. Puree roasted peppers with chipotle in adobo sauce in a food processor; stir into soup. Cover and bring to a boil over high heat; reduce heat to low, and simmer, partly covered, for about 10 minutes.

Stir in cilantro, lime juice and salt.

This is what we had for supper last night.. It was awesome... had just enough spice to have a bit of a kick, but I'd leave more jalapeno seeds next time :) I served this with a Medium Rare T-bone (from Ben :)) and a slice of Garlic Toast...

Eastern Colt Championship

Maggs and I
We headed on down to jacksonville, to try our luck at the jackpot of money and buckles at the Eastern Colt championship....
Well, I didn't do so well.. I did however make it back to the Saturday Night Showcase, there was only 10 of us... and had it all on the line for like $2,500 bucks... and Maggie and I went hauling tail up the side of the arena, wen to make our first turn maggie's feet went out from under her front end and she went down to her knees.. we got back up and if she would have slid just a few inches shorter... we would have actually made the turn.. but, alas.. we didn't... and we had to go back through...
I finished somewhere down the bottom.. but I did get a check for 160 something...  I was shocked when I got that.. hahaha
but, now...... My Cowboy... ohhhhhh man, he was on fire.  Him and his horse Tattoo were cleaning it up..
He wound up winning the Mend SemiPro division.. got himself a nice beltbuckles and a fat check and a big grin...
I was so proud of him.. the last stage he had to run.. I believe he was outrunning these guys by about 3 seconds... and all he had to do was take it on cruise control and shoot all his targets..
Maggie and I headed up into the exit gate to watch.. and he took the course.. and we were screaming and he shot all 10 targets and boy we come unglued!!!!!!!!!

Isn't that awesome?
I'm going to try my luck at the Fort Worth Stockyard Show..

We will see how that goes :)
Here is a picture of Maggie and I at the Eastern Colt..  this picture was taken by a good buddy of ours Jim.

Bells, went to the Vet today to get fixed....  I'm going to make a composting pit this weekend out of palets.. and I'm going to start production on my square foot gardening bins..
I have gotten to the process of building up the garden on paper.. then I'm going to get the seeds and start, starting them.. I'm still waiting on my heirloom seeds catalog to come in the mail..
I haven't begun reading about the greenhouse yet, but I did find out how to make a sun house for all year gardening... the greenhouse book I did buy is on non-heated greenhouses.. so we shall see about that.  things are a little slow around the office.. no one has met their deductibles and no one wants to pay full price for anything.. lol..  Oh well.  more time for me to do some studying on gardening...

be nice and clean...

So here is the Soap I made...
I bought some of those silicon muffin pans.. hahah and I got the ones that were on sale, so this is what I got... hearts and flowers.. :)
I got to reading more on soap, and it has to dry out for 3 weeks now.  it's pretty solid and firm to touch but it kind of feels soft.  So it is just chilling on the back porch..
I also bought soy wax yesterday.. I'm going to try my hand at making candles...  I figure I'll put them in mason jars and see what it turns out like..
I did get my books on composting, the square foot gardening and greenhouses yesterday...  I read the composting book,  I have decided that i'm going to make a big ole pit outside out of pallets.... I'll do that next weekend...
So let me tell y'all a little story about my father and I building the paddock for Kismet...
picture this.. a t-post.. and a slide hammer.... and me... I get one sunk in... and then put a bunch of the fiber glass poles in, because we were running electric fencing....  I get to sink in another t-post.. I hit some rock... I go to slam down REAL hard on the darn thing.... and I grabbed one of the teeth on the t-post with the hammer.. and whack.... right in the head... I about knocked myself out...  I staggered for a minute... got light headed, broke a sweat and almost hit the ground....  my dad looks at me and says "what the hell'd you do that for?"  hahahah.. we laughed about it... and I was telling some people about it later, and I heard a good story...  a friend of ours welded a sledgehammer to the slidehammer and knocked himself out with it.. hahahaha
Farm work ain't for sissies.. :)

Tuesday, January 8, 2013

I have been doing a lot of thinking as of late..  and I want to go ahead and learn more about this whole greenhouse gardening thing.. I found a greenhouse for sale that is 6x8, and I was thinking about buying that and getting started.  I also want to utilize square foot gardening techniques in it..
but, I am also aware that you have to compost..  So I need to make a compost bin....
well I bought a few books today.. and did some research on Mary Janes Farm about all this situation... and I'm going to get started for next year as soon as possible,  I want to grown 10 months out of the year, and start saving heirloom seeds... that's what i'm going to do for this year.. become a self sufficient farm...
I also want to learn how to grow grains... I do have a grain mill..   :)
I did learn how to knit over the Christmas Holidays :)
My Goal is to be self sufficient...

“Hope Smiles from the threshold of the year to come, Whispering 'it will be happier'...” ― Alfred Tennyson

Christmas was good this year.. I realized that things and people only have the value that you assign to them...  thus, making up my new years resolution: I'm going to live my life with the notion that things only have the value that is assigned to them in this life...Therefore; I just put on the rosy glasses and went through the holidays..
New years, was uneventful, We had a bonfire going on in the back yard and my parents were over... but, I will say this... I had to set my alarm clock for 11:45 to watch the ball drop.. and I did.. and I was pissed off at ABC news, because they had that stupid Jenny McCarthy girl down there babbling on about the bacteria in everyones mouths... and then some of the things they were showing just really rubbed me the wrong way... so much so, that I wrote them a long message (500 characters was all I was allowed) explaining to them that Dick Clark would be rolling over in his grave with their mockery of the New Year.
And I digress...
Now it's the new year.. and there are higher taxes and ridiculousness... I'm starting to see angry people everywhere..
but, no one knows what to do about any of it..
On to Greener pastures.. we had a great new years banquet.. ham, collards, black eyed peas and cornbread... then left overs the next day..  and it was goood :)

Kismet is doing great, she is getting along real nice and walking.  I haven't ridden her yet, I might try that on wednesday..  It has been cold.. I mean bitter cold here and I just haven't wanted to get out and ride in the wind.  I can take cold.. but, wind... not so much...
I have been busy non-stop since I got back from Christmas break, and this is the first chance I've had to sit down and type anything..
